~ privacy policy ~

It's become a cliché in privacy policies: "Your privacy is important to us." Unfortunately what they often fail to mention is and your data is what we profit from.

We'll skip the platitudes and legalese and get straight to the point.

How we protect your privacy:

Our cookie policy

We set session cookies for the convenience of the user. These are not tracking cookies. We found the site irritating to browse without session cookies; you would too*. If you wish, install the cookie autodelete (or similar) add-on to automatically purge website cookies from your browser—including the cookies set by ajvocab.com. Otherwise you can set your browser's cookie preferences however you wish.

Updates

If we make any substantial changes to these policies we will post the modifications on this page. If you have questions or concerns regarding this privacy policy please contact us.

*What are 'cookies' anyway? Too many people get bent out of shape about browser cookies without understanding what they actually are. Here is our brief explanation:

There are very basically two types of cookies.

  1. convenience cookies: so a website remembers a user's preferences. Such cookies are employed on ajvocab.com in a few places.
    • Cookies are set when the user changes the help & settings on the vocabulary page.
    • A cookie is set when a user selects a word category in the overview page tag breakdown table. This way it is retained as they poke around the site so they can see how many, i.e. avian words are used in each title.
    • Cookies are also set to remember the selected book title, selected faq, etc. None of these cookies are used for tracking purposes.

  2. tracking cookies. These nefarious boogers track everything a user does across the internet. We don't use them and in reality they are increasingly less important; the big players on the internet use browser fingerprints to help track you—we don't do that either.
