2. obviously nutmeg is a spice, but here are some interesting facts:
- It was once believed to prevent the plague, so during Shakespeare's time prices skyrocketed.
- It was once taken in large doses as an abortifacient - it works because it kills both the mother and the child (don't try it)
- In 1667 the British "traded" the (South Pacific nutmeg producing colony) Banda Islands to the Dutch in exhange for Manhattan and New York.
- very large doses can cause delerium, convulsions, nausea, palpatations and various other bad side effects. Again, don't try it.
- nutmeg is fatally neurotoxic to dogs, however they are drawn to the scent and may snarf it. Don't feed it to Fido.
