The Russian general during most of the Napoleonic wars. He is highly regarded in Russia.
"He had five daughters; his only son died of smallpox as an infant. As he had no male heir, his estates passed to the Tolstoy family, as his eldest daughter, Praskovia, had married Matvei Fyodorovich Tolstoy."
Russian reinforcements were also further delayed by the direction of General Barclay, the man in charge of the main Russian contingent. Instead of engaging Napoleon directly, Barclay took refuge in Moscow in an attempt to organize a larger army to send after the French. Tsar Alexander soon grew impatient of this cat and mouse game; unhappy with Barclay’s strategy, the Tsar had him replaced with the more experienced Mikhail Kutuzov, who adopted a more aggressive strategy.
