When a specific work of art is referenced in a novel we try to include that specific work in the definition—unless the artist's work is not in the public domain.

We generally exclude definitions which are commonly known; this does not extend to artists. It just seemed wrong to snub van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rodin, Michalangelo, da Vinci, Picasso, Whistler and ohers just because they are household names. Besides, while most people are familiar with the names of famous artists, their knowledge often ends there.

One way to study artists is to copy several of their works into a computer wallpaper (background) changer. Each time the wallpaper updates name the artist who painted it. If you are really dedicated name the work of art and appoximately what year it was painted (appropriately named files helps). The obsessed can move on to what it last sold for, what museum it is currently at, where they will hang it once they obtain it, etc.
